Crowds turn out to support Sabrina's Mile 2016

CROWDS of supporters braved terrible weather this weekend to walk, run and raise money in memory of a much-loved Swindon woman. Sabrina Moccia died suddenly at the end of January following a cardiac arrest, she was just 33 years old. She suffered with diabetes and her family have now set up a charity, in her name, aimed at supporting others with the illness in the Swindon area.

On Saturday, a large crowd gathered at Coate Water Park in heavy rain to take part in Sabrina’s Mile – the first event from the charity in which as many people as possible were encouraged to walk, run, hop, skip or skate a mile in her memory wherever they were in the world. It is hoped that donations from participants can be put towards finding direct ways to help local people, living with diabetes, manage their quality of life.

Speaking at the event, Luisa Moccia - Sabrina’s mother, said: “It’s been really overwhelming, the weather is so rubbish but people have come and they’ve donated so generously. “Today is her birthday and so it’s obviously not an easy day - I’m lost for words and so grateful.”

Before she died, Sabrina worked as a motivational coach at Swindon’s Shaw Trust, helping disabled people get back into work.

The idea for Sabrina’s Mile came from a story about a young Canadian athlete that she would often tell those in need of encouragement. Despite losing a leg to cancer, Terry Fox was inspired to raise a million dollars to help children with with the disease. He planned to run all the way across Canada – some 4,500 miles. Illness meant he was unable to complete his challenge but he still managed to cover 3,339 miles as well as the 3,107 miles he had already completed in training. He achieved all that with just one leg and a succession of artificial ones too – in total he raised a staggering 24.7 million dollars.

Luisa said: “People would come in needing help getting back into work and she would tell this story because she thought it was just amazing. “It was her job to motivate people and try to give them confidence, she was very bubbly and would really do her best to inspire them.”

It wasn't just people in Swindon who walked for Sabrina on Saturday, the Facebook page set up for the event shows others taking part in Devon, Cornwall, in the north of England and even as far away as Sydney, Australia.

Luisa said: “It would be lovely if we could do this every year. We’re also planning on doing other things like quiz nights to raise money too. “Hopefully we can make a real difference to some local people with diabetes – Sabrina had the pump fitted and it changed her life so we would like to help with that maybe. “We don’t just want to send the money off somewhere, we want to help people locally where we can really see the difference.”

It is not too late to complete your own mile in Sabrina’s memory.
